Described in various quarters as the best uncapped full-back in Scotland, Cleland exercised his right under freedom of contract to leave Glasgow Rangers for Everton in July 1998. The Manager who reluctantly saw him quit Ibrox then became his new boss at Goodison Park. A polished and tidy defender, he started his career at Dundee United. Despite an impressive start to his career on Merseyside, Alec missed the second half of last season through injury and has not played much part this season.
